Scope of work:

Project Overview

I work with The Scotch Malt Whisky Society on improvements to its member experience and the introduction of new features. For Bottle Keep, I explored how members could keep a record of their purchases, rate what they had tried and use that feedback to receive more personal recommendations.

The Challenge

The brief was to give members a useful log of what they were buying and a simple way to rate it. The experience needed to connect that history with recommendations, while recognising that a purchase is not always a reflection of the member’s own taste.

My focus was on the relationship between remembering a bottle, giving feedback and understanding what to explore next.

User Journey

A star rating records how the member felt about a bottle. The follow-up answer records whether they would buy it again. In the proposed journey, Yes leads to a similar recommendation and No leads to a contrasting flavour profile. The answer drives the direction, rather than a threshold inferred from the star score.

A bottle bought as a gift stays in the history, but the member can skip a personal rating. The proposed rule excludes that purchase from personal taste signals and removes it from the unrated count. The gift label can be undone if selected by mistake.

Explorations

I began by exploring several ways to present the collection: a list, a grid and a timeline, alongside a pop-up approach for the rating interaction. This helped us consider both the overall browsing experience and how a member would give feedback on an individual bottle.

Refining The Timeline

We selected the timeline as the best direction for the feature and developed it further. It gave the journal a chronological structure while leaving room to connect each bottle with its rating and a relevant next suggestion.

The refinements explored where the star rating, follow-up question and recommendation should sit. Keeping these elements beside the original bottle gives the feedback a clear context, so the member can see which experience a suggestion relates to.

The timeline also distinguishes bottles that still need a rating from entries that already have feedback. A visible count and a Rate the next one action provide a direct route back to unfinished entries.
